What is a condom and how did it originate?Male Condom A male condom is a thin barrier that is worn over the erect penis. This method of contraception provides protection from STDs - sexually-transmitted diseases including AIDS and helps protect against pregnancy. Condom derives from the Latin word condus which means receptacle and was originally designed as a prophylactic against STDs associated with prostitution. When used properly condoms are very effectiveness in preventing pregnancy and STDs including AIDs. Female Condom 
There are also female condoms which are thin polyurethane sheath and have a flexible ring at either end. One end is closed and is inserted into the vagina and covers the cervix. The other end is open and the ring sits outside the opening of the vagina and covers part of the perineum and the base of the penis during intercourse. This condom is pre-lubricated inside the condom however it contains on spermaicide. This condom lines the entire vagina and helps to prevent against pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) including HIV.
